Doom 6.66 Update. The update from hell

Bethesda Oh Bethesda! For anyone who doesn’t know Bethesda, they are one of the leading developers/publishing power houses in the industry with a long list of hit games including Elder Scrolls, Fallout and many more.

They also have a rabid fan base and one that is so beguiled by their games and utterly convinced Bethesda themselves are gods of the industry that they can do no wrong; this is simply misguided and deluded! I have personally thoroughly enjoyed many of their games, and their effect and impact on the industry is undeniable. However, I have seen a trend of recent with Bethesda and unfortunately one of them becoming far less consumer friendly. From denying early review codes to journalists, the paid mods debacle which has lead to the new potential disaster of the creation club! But what this rant is really about is the recent announcement of the new Doom update (6.66) which quite literally turns out to be an update from hell!

The update makes all of the season pass content part of the core game for free, on paper this sounds great and typically would be something I would support! No more dividing of the community of those players who don’t own the DLC map packs for multiplayer and more content in the base game for consumers. However, this is probably the most anti-consumer thing Bethesda has done yet if you think about the other consequences of their actions and recent decisions!

Update 6.66 has screwed over many people who recently stumped up the cash for the season pass which was around £30 or your regional equivalent. In addition to this two weeks before this announcement game sales like Xbox ultimate sale had the season pass on sale, Bethesda fully knowing that they planned to make it free shortly after the sale ended. The level of pure greed on display by Bethesda by preying (pun intended) on consumers who didn’t realise what they were paying for what would be worthless two weeks later. It certainly looks like cashing in for a few extra sales while they can. Good luck on getting a refund if you were one of the unfortunate people who did buy it in the sale.

For actions like these they need to be held accountable; they are not totally free of shady practices like some would like to believe. Consumers need to be made aware of such shady practices in the industry so they can make informed choices on who they support. Buying such projects will only further encourage such actions making this the norm. Think carefully before you make a purchase. At the end of the day, they are here to make money if they know people won’t buy it on the grounds of changes made then these business practices won’t be reinforced. Bethesda is indeed taking you on a ride to hell with this update; buyers beware!
